Allegheny College students get involved - Part 1

Hello Everyone,

My name is Elise Swanekamp and I originate from Buffalo, New York. This is my first year at Allegheny College; here I plan to double major in International Studies and Economics. Before I began college I knew that I wanted to be heavily involved in College Democrats. From an early age my father instilled the importance of being an educated voter and citizen. American history is rich with democratic ideals; I take pride in this fact. Thus, I want to take advantage of every opportunity I have to promote othersb knowledge on the topics of politics. While attending a Democratic rally one Saturday I met Kathy Dahlkemper. She had a firm handshake and we shared similar points of view on policy. So I knew then that I would support her over Phil English, a fourteen-year, Republican incumbent. While I was out canvassing on a brisk Saturday morning I was saddened to find that most individuals who answered the door were uneducated about the nature of Democrats.  Not all hope is lost in the education of voters. Inspiration comes in unexpected places. While canvassing I met the sweetest ninety-four year old man, who daily reads the newspaper to keep up to date on politics. If he can do it anyone can!
