United Steelworkers Endorse Dahlkemper for US Congress

Erie, PA – Democratic Congressional candidate Kathy Dahlkemper received the endorsement of the United Steelworkers, the largest industrial labor union in North America, at a press conference today at USW Local 1016 in Wheatland, PA.

The United Steelworkers represent more than 1.2 million members and retirees, with over 12,000 in the 3rd District.

“We have chosen Kathy Dahlkemper because she understands how so-called free trade agreements have led to a race to the bottom in this country, and particularly in places like Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District,” said USW International President Leo W. Gerard. “She has made it clear she will work for fair trade, which will give workers in Pennsylvania a fair chance to compete in the global economy,” Gerard added.

Dahlkemper responded by saying, “I am both honored and humbled by the endorsement of the United Steelworkers.  They represent the foundation of this great country.  Our growth as an industrialized nation is due in no small part to the men and women of this great union.”

“When in Congress I will work to renegotiate NAFTA and CAFTA, to ensure that we have fair trade,” she said.

“The members of the Steelworkers Union are some of the hardest-working men and women in the world. It is their work which has helped build a stronger America that benefits all of us, and we all deserve a fair playing field,”  Dahlkemper added.

“My jobs plan will address trade and eliminating tax benefits for companies that take jobs overseas. In addition, it will provide for job retention and attraction and make provisions for retraining,” she said.

After recognizing the workers, Dahlkemper moved onto campaign issues:

“Our nation is at its strongest when we reach across party lines and work together creating a healthy economic climate.  Middle class and working families are the engine of our economy, and the loss of the good-paying jobs that support them is one reason our economy is faltering.  We are seeing the fruits of Congressman English’s 14 years of experience throughout PA’s 3rd District, and I understand your frustration with English’s failure to meet the economic, trade and healthcare needs of this District," said Dahlkemper.
